Aromatherapy Patches: An Aromatherapist’s Honest Review

As I sit writing this article to share my honest review of aromatherapy patches infused with essential oils, I’m greeted by the intoxicating yet energizing aroma of peppermint and orange drifting up from the little patch I’m currently wearing on my jumper. It’s the perfect scent to gently encourage and invigorate after a busy day.

I’m so impressed with this product — and I’ll come back to that shortly — but first, I wanted to share a little about who I am, alongside a brief history of aromatherapy and how it has evolved over the years.

Meet the Author: A Qualified Aromatherapist’s Perspective

My name is Kirsty Summerbell, and I am a qualified aromatherapist and a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, meaning I am fully insured. I completed my training in 2021 and have been practising ever since, with a special interest in aromatherapy for mental health and wellbeing.

Combining Aromatherapy and Mindfulness for Wellbeing

Alongside my work as an aromatherapist, I am also an accredited mindfulness teacher. I combine both my expertise and lived experience to show how nature-based practices and mindfulness can work together to gently support our overall wellbeing.

A Brief History of Aromatherapy

While it feels like I’ve been working in this field for quite some time now, aromatherapy itself has actually been around for hundreds of years…

Ancient Roots of Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Aromatherapy has been part of human wellbeing practices for centuries. Long before essential oils were neatly bottled and labelled, plants were distilled, infused, and used intuitively to support both physical and emotional health.

In the 17th century, herbalist Nicholas Culpeper was already advocating for plant-based remedies that worked in harmony with the body and the natural world, believing that this knowledge should be accessible to everyone, not just a select few.

The Origins of Modern Aromatherapy

Modern aromatherapy as we know it began to take shape in the 20th century, thanks largely to Madame Marguerite Maury. She was one of the first to truly recognise the connection between essential oils, the nervous system, and emotional wellbeing.

Maury also introduced the idea that aromatherapy should be personal — that blends should be created with the individual in mind, rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. This philosophy remains at the heart of professional aromatherapy today.

Aromatherapy in the Modern World

In the 21st century, aromatherapy is more visible and accessible than ever. Essential oils are everywhere, woven into our everyday wellbeing routines in ways that feel familiar and comforting.

However, in the UK, aromatherapy itself isn’t formally regulated, meaning products can be created and sold without specialist training. This makes it even more important to look at how and by whom aromatherapy products are developed.

Why I Was Drawn to Nuvina Aromatherapy Patches

This is one of the reasons I was so drawn to Nuvina’s aromatherapy patches. Their products are created in collaboration with qualified aromatherapists, ensuring that the essential oils used are thoughtfully chosen, safely blended, and used with genuine therapeutic intent — not just for fragrance alone.

Testing Aromatherapy Patches in Everyday Life

And with that in mind, let’s return to the little patch I mentioned at the start…

I was sent several patches to wear over a period of four weeks, which allowed me to try them out in different locations, at different times, and while doing a variety of tasks.

First Impressions of the Aromatherapy Patches

The aromatherapy patches arrived on a rainy morning — and to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, as this isn’t something I’ve come across much as an aromatherapist.

When I opened the box, I discovered two small bags: one labelled Lift and the other Chill.

The Lift Patch: Invigorating Aromatherapy for Energy and Focus

Because it was a cold, rainy day here in the UK, I reached for the Invigorating bag and pulled out a small patch with the sweetest little design.

Inside the patch — in tiny pop beads — were the essential oils of peppermint and sweet orange. Each patch contains four beads, which can be popped all at once for a stronger aroma, or just one at a time for a subtler scent.

How to Use Aromatherapy Patches Safely

Once you’ve added your patch to your garment, you can pop your chosen number of beads. Gradually, the aroma begins to release, drifting softly towards your nostrils.

As with all essential oils, it’s best to place the stickers on clothing rather than directly on the skin and avoid contact with eyes. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, a patch test is always recommended.

Peppermint Essential Oil Benefits

Peppermint – Crisp, fresh, and cooling, peppermint instantly awakens the senses. It’s ideal for focus, alertness, and clearing a foggy mind, making it perfect for busy days when you need a subtle boost.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil Benefits

Sweet Orange
 – Warm, bright, and gently sweet, sweet orange has an uplifting and comforting quality. It helps ease tension, lift mood, and create emotional balance.

The Lift Blend: Peppermint and Sweet Orange Together

Together, peppermint and sweet orange create a blend that is both energising and gentle. It’s like having a pocket of calm motivation — ideal for focus, productivity, and emotional uplift.

The Chill Patch: Lavender Aromatherapy for Calm and Relaxation

I’ve been so enamoured with the Lift blend that I nearly forgot to share how wonderful the Chill patch is.

This patch contains just one essential oil — lavender, and as an aromatherapist, it’s one of my absolute favourites.

Lavender Essential Oil Benefits

Lavender – Soft, floral, and gently herbaceous, lavender is deeply calming and grounding. It supports relaxation, eases tension, and helps quiet a busy mind.

Using Lavender Aromatherapy in Stressful Situations

The first time I wore the Chill patch was under my coat while food shopping — a task I often find stressful. I popped all four beads, and before long, the calming scent of lavender began to drift towards me.

The Science Behind Lavender and Anxiety Relief

Lavender is well known for its calming properties, and research supports its use. A systematic review of 20 randomised clinical trials found that inhaled lavender essential oil often had a positive effect on reducing anxiety (Jafari-Koulaee et al., 2020).

Aromatherapy, when used thoughtfully, can complement medical care and everyday wellbeing practices — something I see reflected both in research and real-life experience.

Real-Life Experiences Using Aromatherapy Patches

Over the four weeks, I used the patches in many different scenarios.

Aromatherapy Patches for Travel Anxiety

While stuck in traffic on the way to a workshop, I reached for a Chill patch. As the lavender aroma filled my car, my shoulders dropped and a wave of calm washed over me.

Replacing Coffee with Invigorating Aromatherapy

I also tried travelling with the Lift patch, swapping my usual coffee for peppermint and sweet orange. The result was gentle, focused energy without jitters.

Why Wearable Aromatherapy Fits Into Everyday Life

One of the best things about these patches is how portable and discreet they are — perfect for school runs, dog walks, job interviews, or working from home.

Aromatherapy Patches for Mindfulness and Meditation

As a mindfulness teacher, I particularly love using them during meditation. Popping just one bead provides a subtle scent that enhances focus without overwhelming the space.

Final Thoughts: Are Aromatherapy Patches Worth Trying?

Overall, I’ve been genuinely impressed with both blends.

The Lift patch is ideal for energy, focus, and motivation.

The Chill patch is perfect for calming the nervous system and creating moments of peace during busy days.

What I love most is how practical, discreet, and versatile these aromatherapy patches are. Whether you’re seeking calm, clarity, or a gentle mood lift, they make it easy to enjoy the benefits of essential oils wherever life takes you.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful, effective, and easy-to-use way to experience aromatherapy, I wholeheartedly recommend giving these patches a try.
